This work is based mainly on the Jatra artists, characters played by them and the psychology that drives them to be a part of this folk cult form.

Dating back to 16th century, the Jatra is a famous folk theatre form of united Bengal(Bangladesh and West Bengal), employing dialogue, monologue, songs and instrumental music to tell stories . Jatra pala ,as the plays are called ,are enacted on wooden stages without any barriers between the actors and the audience, facilitating direct communication. The plots vary from India mythology and historical incident to something more contemporary and based on social issues. The partition of India had a major impact on Jatra as artistes in the newly formed East-Pakistan (later Bangladesh), a Muslim majority country, discontinued to enact Hindu religious folktales such as Krishna lila ,Devi thakurani,kongso bodh,kaliadaman etc. On the other side of the border, artistes in west bengal stopped playing Muslim characters such as Siraj-ud-dullah,Shah jahan, Akbar etc.

The advent of cinema and TV in the 60s and 70s blew a deadly blow to the theatre art form. In 2013, over 600 Jatra companies employ over 2,00,000 people but their situation has come to forcing them to often offer free performances.

Fraglich Publishing and Alkazi Collection of Photography
Hard Cover
1st Edition, 2021
English
120 pages

Bringing forth the silent voices in the history of photography, this publication highlights key aspects of image production and representation by four ‘minute camera’ practitioners in India: Bharat Bhushan Mahajan (Delhi), Teekam Chand Pahari and Surendar Kumar Pahari (Jaipur); and Kinshan Chand Hemlani (Pushkar).

Commonly used in the subcontinent till the ‘90s, it supported the image-making aspirations of all classes gathering in the street. The diary is a fictional ‘found archive’ that contains his collection of photographic prints, letters, torn pages from books, newspaper and magazine cuttings, declassified police records, polaroids and print advertisements obtained from different sources. Through these documents spanning the twentieth century, he attempts to trace photographic ‘evidence’ and information about an elusive woman who seemingly does not age through a century. Mr Bose’s search is also a journey through the local history of vernacular photography and regional publications that reflect popular culture, politics, fashion, design, advertising and other iconography, and their transformations over time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0504/2706/8580/products/PORTALBYSHANBHATTACHARYA_ANUDAVIS_C3A2889.jpg?v=1650106386
seeking-moksha-nishant-shukla
SEEKING MOKSHA - Nishant Shukla

Alkazi Foundation for the Arts
Hardcover
1st Edition, 2017
English / Hindi
88 pages 3 inserts

“In 2011, I walked to the source of the Ganga in the Himalaya to collect water for my grandfather, a Hindu priest, who was on his deathbed. In these quiet moments we find the comfort and rhythm of ageing filled with companionship. Time slips by, like in a dream, as we move from the aesthetic of a home interior to closer plays of light on the textures and wrinkles of his parents’ skin. Protected in a beautiful brown case, with notes of the artists’ parents replicated inside, this accordion becomes both book and object. As we weave through the small gestures and moments that surround the life of this couple, Saith has constructed our engagement in a manner that has no beginning, nor end. Exploring the capacities of cameras to connect us with people and their pasts, the book seeks to redirect the ethical premise of photography to probe the structures of caste oppression.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0504/2706/8580/products/DALIT-BOOK-NPL_ANU-DAVIS_C3A2373.jpg?v=1650623564
cups-of-nun-chai
CUPS OF NUN CHAI by Alana Hunt

Yaarbal Books
Softcover
2nd Edition, 2023
English
316 pages

"Cups of nun chai records the sharing of one hundred and eighteen cups of nun chai, and just as many conversations. I started working on it around 12 years ago. It’s been cathartic looking at relationships that has been at my core. This work is about the bonds we share with the women in our families and the roles they end up playing in shaping our lives. I believe it is a circle that's just as vulnerable, as it is strong. I started this work, as an attempt to reconnect back to them. I think I was hoping to find my way back home and to parts of myself that I had lost. I wanted to look at memory, loss, and ageing as a woman. Today, they survive in a vernacular culture quite distinct from largescale digital productions. The work of the sign-painters represents a visual itinerary through the historical-economic changes of Indian society over the years; paintings that emerge in vivid shapes and colours and humanise the sharp aesthetics of the subjects and objects of globalised capitalism.
The book showcases a part of artist Aradhana Seth’s photographic archive: a multitude of designs on shop shutters, doors, signs and the walls of various places of interest and businesses. Complementing the publication are biographies of Raza Abbas, Praveen Chauan, Prashant Janardhan Dalvi and Shakeel, just some of the artists who created the paintings photographed; a critical text by visual culture lecturer Kajri Jain, outlining the theoretical framework within which to interpret these visual forms, as well as an autobiographical text by artist Francesco Clemente.

Tulika Books

Over the last three decades, Sheba Chhachhi has developed an art practice that traverses the fields of documentary photography, installation, video and new media, creating immersive environments and bringing the contemplative into the political, in both site-specific public art and independent works. She has created a number of large photo-based installations incorporating light, sound and the moving image, and pursued long-term photography projects such as on women-ascetics and the female body. Chhachhi experiments across the spectrum of durational mediums from pre-cinematic animated lightboxes to virtual reality interactivity, as well as in diverse sites: community centres, galleries, shopping malls, public institutions. These experiments are marked by a special interest in exploring relationships with viewers/participants. Since 1999, public art interventions have been a significant aspect of her work. Arc Silt Dive is about the work of Sheba Chhachhi; it maps her methods, the modes of address and inquiry in her photographs, animated lightboxes, videos, and installations. Editorial anxieties circled around the unavoidable ekphrasis of translating the rich immersive experience of multidimensional installations into flat images, prose text, and verbal description. Yet this change of medium need not be reductive. Rather, it may be seen as a bound moment in the peripatetic trajectory of installations which are frequently reworked and retested at different sites, and face new formal and contextual dilemmas in each. The book folds into and extends the ekphrastic aspects of the installation as a form that can transfer or transpose the properties and functions of image and object, spatialize and visualize text, enact a tactile textualization of objects and materials, or become a performative loop that threads or sutures the formal divides of performance, literature, architecture, painting, sculpture, film, photography, and digital composition.The artworks reproduced in this book are not sequenced chronologically; rather, following arcs of connectivity and unexpected conjunction, they are reclustered thematically and visually, re-installed along some of their own overlaps, intersections or displacements. Configural worlds, cracked yet bound in/by affective relationship, the installations convey a sense of recursive reflection in the circulation of images, concepts, concerns, in which little seems to be permanently abandoned and much is reworked, often in technological mediums falling into market-induced obsolescence.

Self Published
Softcover
First edition, 2023
English
126 Pages

"Crazy Cat & Lady is an autobiographical love story. We went through a rollercoaster of emotions while working on it, from rage and frustration to joy and tenderness, and hope. The book is full of human error (the cat is perfect); in it you’ll find glue marks, scraggly edges, grammatical errors galore, scratched out words, etc. It has been narrated through photographs, collages, hand-written text and doodles - the photographs used were taken through 2020-2022. This body of work is an intersectional exploration of love & companionship, personal politics, mental health, emotional behaviour, spirituality… and the magic of cats, of course.
